Acetone will clean it well enough. If your gelcoat is real smooth or has been painted I would scuff it a bit with a 400 grit paper. Regular aluminum rivets are fine, just use the proper drill size. ALWAYS run your drill backwards through the gelcoat then forward through the glass. That will prevent spider web cracking around the hole.

Believe me the 5200 would hold it without a rivet. Try some on some scrap and try to get I apart after a week just for kicks.

I thought the Scangauge codes and the Cummins engine codes are completely different.

Is that true or not?

That is correct. Cummins service manuals reference codes via the Cummins Insite software. Scanguage SPN/FMI codes would need to be converted to the Cummins code to use the Cummins service manual. To do the conversion, the Internet is your friend.

Is my Engine Brake working?
nvrtoofast

I have a 2006. As said previously, there is a significant increase in braking. I run mine 90% of the time. As for the sound, it is quiet compared to a tractor trailer. I hear no audible exhaust burble. Especially not what you're expecting from the tractor trailer side of things. I do hear increased engine noise, this is actually exhaust noise but muffled.

The brake sound is muffled enough that it is likely unnoticeable from the exterior. At least I like to think so. If you're not getting a significant increase in braking, I would have it looked at as it is highly useful and has kept me well away from the car in front who decides to brake a tad too late. I also like to use it to reduce wear on the brakes.

My 2004 Cheetah does not high/low brake switch, right?

Previous owner said never to use it above 50mph [as he did] engine does not like that !!

Mine seems to work but when I go to speed up, switch it off and accelerate the transition is far from smooth, quite the jerk. How best to use it?

The following is based on EXPERIENCE...and I can't find any technical info to support it. I noticed that my Exhaust Brake...and I don't have, like you, the INTAKE HEAD or the REAL JACOBS Brake. Just the Cummins factory VGT system... was really harsh and ragged. NOT GOOD.

On a whim, I decided it was NOT the brake....but the Transmission. The VGT could NOT be "jerking me around" like that.

I did the electronic level checking, exactly....per the manual of the Allison. I do NOT have a Dipstick...but they are notoriously....SOMETIMES, totally in accurate unless you change the fluid and then refill properly and then TEST AND CALIBRATE the dipstick.

SO, I added about half a quart of Transynd. Drove that for a while....maybe less than 50 miles. The JERK or the downshift was less abrupt. BUT, not where it was when new or after the first Allison service. NOW....as a point of reference, the second Allison service was done sort of "incorrectly". The tech let all the fluid drain...for a while as he did other stuff. That is a NO NO per Allison. The 19 Quart refill is supposed to be done THEN...not let it sit overnight.

The Allison electronic level lights said 3 QUARTS low. OMG. But Allison told me that the level system also "LIED". So they told me to add only ONE quart....drive it and get it really hot and then test. I did that and ended up putting in 2 quarts. Then I did a lot of heavy up and down and such grades and whatever. I NEVER had a leak.

OK....so there was NOT any evidence that the Fluid Level was actually correct...but it drove fine.

Therefore....I added a second pint or half quart. Now UP to a FULL quart of "added to an LVL OK " tranny. Another improvement.

Bottom LINE... Did it again. It is perfect. Just like before.

NOW, if you have NOT had the Allison serviced, then it is TIME to do that. Do a FULL FILTER and REFIL. Assuming you have the deep sump MH3000, that is 19 Quarts. ONLY USE TRANSYND...the REAL ALLISON Fluid. OR, I would also consider Mobil 2 Delvac Transynd (TS 295) fluid. THAT IS THE ONLY NON ALLISON brand that I would even think about.

That's my take. Folks will scratch their whatevers and say....THAT IS CRAZY. Crazy works....if you do it logically and methodically and with an understanding.

Good Luck...

Is my Engine Brake working?

@Keith H.Your initial post could be confusing to some newbies so lets get the terminology correct first.

BIG difference between an Engine Brake and an Exhaust Brake. There are excellent explanations on the Internet explaining the differences and how each one works.

Your coach has an Engine Brake not an Exhaust Brake. Although I have read where there can be a combination of the two specifically when the Cummins engine came with a Variable Vane Turbo AND an Engine Brake.

I went from having an PRXB PacBrake Exhaust Brake on my 02 WIndsor (ISC-350) to a two stage engine brake on my 06 Dynasty (ISL-400-2). I will never go back to an exhaust brake again.

However, I had to "learn" how to use it correctly. To get the best efficiency from the engine brake on steep grades I make sure my speed is less than 55 mph. If you normally travel 60-75 mph the speed has to come down to less than 55 for it to really feel a difference. With the larger Cummins engines it's probably not necessarily the same. The larger Cummins engines most likely have a better effect at higher speeds, IDK.

On most grades, I start with the engine brake in HIGH and toggle between HIGH and LOW to control my speed. As stated, once my speed is around 54 mph, the HIGH engine brake is turned on. Then once my speed is down around 45-50 mph I toggle it back to LOW. If it increases back to 54 mph I toggle it back to HIGH.

You do not have a warranty on it anymore. So open it up and check inside.

My BlueOx Patriot did the same and it has a 12v battery inside that died. Easy to find on Amazon and replaced it. Now it is still working and a much cheaper fix than $1500 for a new one.
I suspect your may have a battery inside that could be replaced.

My finishing skills are not my best skills, but I cleaned the roof and Dicor before and after. Fine thread counts on fastener to bite into thin aluminum skin. Been up about 6 years . Dicor brackets again last year, found nothing alarming. 05 Knight.

If you’ve never made use of the inverter in 16 years why would you consider spending $2000 to replace it? How many sets of batteries have you wasted money on in 16 years? Bypass the inverter and get rid of the batteries. When/if you decide to sell you could spend the money and sell it with brand new inverter and batteries thereby enhancing your sale price.

Murray: For all the reasons Rick and Tom said, I need house batteries for lights, water pump, thermostats, etc. Wish it was simple as geting rid of batteries. I intend to take it apart this weekend and " see what I can see". Hopefully something simple.

I intend to take it apare this weekend and if I can't find the problem then I will have to choose between getting a new one or trying repair. Thanks for your suggestions.

Jim, I need more information. Your Imperial (with a Cummins engine) came factory equipped with a Sauer Danfoss electronic fan controller. It worked with your Cummins ECU to control the fan speed.

Did you replace this system with a mechanical wax valve from either Source Engineering or White House Products?

If so, how long ago was this and when did it stop working?

Well, at minimum you could get by with one 12V house battery.

You will still need your two 12V chassis batteries!

Alternator regulator issue
BrianH

I'm still chasing the gremlins. Cleaned up the voltage regulator connector and ground and the tach bounce is gone. But I haven't road tested. I can still end up starting the rig and getting no tach or charge. If I turn off and restart it will come back. It's really starting to feel like bad wire somewhere or ignition switch with an intermittent connection. Front console gets A LOT of vibration going down the road so potential points of failure. I really appreciate the thoughts from everyone and will post when I finally find the culprit.

Do a search. Put STEPS as key word. Click on Everywhere. Select FILES from the dropdown. Do the search you most LIKEY have CoachStep. Download the Coachstep file. There is a simple trouble shooting guideline in the back. 4 steps(memory. That will tell you exactly what is wrong.

Good Luck. NOW if you have Kwikee….you can look at the Coach Step pictures….odds are CoachStep. But if Kwikee, then do the search again and select the Kwikee file. All in there.

Yes…anything can be done with enough “creativity”. But, you are going to upset when you camp for a while and then the chassis is dead and you can’t start the engine.

From a “Forum Staff” perspective where we add footnotes or caveats….trying to be creative and recommending something that goes against the original design and manufacturer’s prints and build and traditional logic is footnoted with….the following caveat.

Eliminating house batteries and an inverter is not recommended. Do this at your own peril and the staff and site are not liable for any damages or lack of functionality of other adverse effects.

Let’s move on to solving the issue as the poster suggested.

Thanks….

We are in the middle of looking for parts for our 1998 Monaco dynasty, which was wiped out on the left side by a freeway accident in California. I suppose I should have realized this but wanted to pass it along. It is getting harder and harder to find the parts we need for the older Monacos. By the way, Monaco member Don Fleming has helped us immeasurably getting several doors from M& M.Coach in Victorville with this friend Jessie. he has gone above and beyond the call of duty and we thank him. Here's what you're up against. . . .Visione in Kentucky, the largest RV salvage yard, had a beautiful picture of a 1998 Monaco dynasty, which I will attach..it looked exactly like ours. .My wife even said boy.Why don't we buy that? And just drive it back.I called to order some parts and they said no parts were available at all. I said how can thst be????? you have a nice picture there on the website. he says."Well, you have to understand we have 2000 R Vs. .When rig comes in we take all the pictures but we don't have the time to update any of the pictures and that rig has all been parted out." I called Ron at Colaw Salvage in missouri and he said it's getting harder and harder to get Monaco parts and he had nothing that would fit our rig. We're working with Arizona RV salvage and I believe they are gonna help us out on the parts but it's getting a little scary to get what you need. Keep in mind we're a tough case because we have no slides. And the rig was made in 1998. I'll put in a photo of our rig so you can see how much it looked like the one that Visione in Kentucky had.

You should have an equalization cylinder under the coach. It's often mounted on the back exterior of the last bay before the drive axle. See if any of those hoses are leaking. The hoses from that equalization cylinder feed the actual slide cylinders.

Frank, I've never seen any equalization cylinders for my two front hyd slides!

Do I definitely have them somewhere?

Hydraulic leak, bedroom slideout, 05 Dynasty Countess

If you have hydraulic slides, you will have an equalization cylinder for each slide. This is what keeps the two slide cylinders working in sync. If I recall correctly on mine there is one in the fuel tank bay, one in a storage bay and a third is on the exterior bay wall in front of the drive axle.

Lippert that sells Kwikee steps can provide a testing harness that plugs into the connector. With this and a 12V source you can test the steps functionality without the other issues in the coach that might exist. It will help to isolate the problem area/cause.
