Railways raises FY25 loco production target by 27 per cent
According to the latest plan, 1,300 WAG 9H locomotives will be made annually in FY26 and FY27, while 200 units of the WAP 7 variant will be manufactured every year in this period. Besides locomotives, the production plan for 50 Amrit Bharat trains has also been approved for FY25. This will mean production of 1,230 coaches at the production units of the railways.

In the trial, the train automatically stopped 10 meters before a red signal at a speed of 160 kmph without the loco pilot applying the brakes. This parameter will now be standardized for all eight-car Vande Bharat trains nationwide. The 'Kavach' system, installed in all Vande Bharat trains, can automatically apply brakes if the loco pilot fails to do so.

A three-way train collision in India has claimed hundreds of lives, leading to questions about rail safety, particularly after it was found that the anti-train collision system, or Kavach, was not installed on the route where the incident occurred. Modi's government had announced the safety system in its 2022 budget and had last year tendered to bring 3,000 km of rail network under the technology. However, the system has only been installed on 1,445 km of routes so far, and the armour will still be missing on over 95% of Indian Railways’ routes.
