This year’s commemoration marks the 50th Anniversary observation of Vietnam Veterans Day, which was originally declared in 1974.

Retrace the steps of the 1985 Welcome Home Parade for Vietnam Veterans. The Extended route is recommended only for those physically fit enough to maintain a 20 minute per mile pace for 3.5 miles; other marchers should opt for the Canyon of Heroes route. Advance registration required.

Our annual ceremony honoring those who served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War. Featuring military honors, remarks and reflections, presentation of proclamations, and presentation of the Patrick L. Gualtieri Service to Vietnam Veterans Award.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day (actual holiday is 03/29/2024) is a day to remember and honor the 9 million Americans who served during that war, as well as the 58,000 names on the wall at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC.

The USS Hornet CVS-12 was an anti-submarine aircraft carrier that served 3 tours off the coast of Vietnam at Yankee Station in the latter years of her active service. Most of the ship has been left in the exact state it was when it was decommissioned in 1970. Included in our aircraft collection are several from this era, including our US-2B Tracker, F8U-1 Crusader, TA-4J Skyhawk, UH-34D Seahorse, SH-2 Seasprite, SH-3H SeaKing, and our F4J Phantom II.

We have a special speaker coming to the USS Hornet on March 30, starting at 11 AM:Bill Collier, Vietnam War Marine Helicopter Pilot and author.Bill also flew for Air America after the Vietnam War.Bill flew the UH-34D Seahorse Helicopter on display at the USS Hornet Museum and will share his experiences with everyone who comes to the museum on the 30th.The main presentation starts at 11 AM and Bill will also have copies of his books for sale that he will be happy to autograph. The USS Hornet Museum will also have a special Vietnam War temporary exhibit up all weekend, curated by our partners from the Nisei Veteran’s Exhibit.

In 2022, the City of Waterloo joined the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration as a Commemorative Partner. Van Grinsven entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968, serving about one year at San Diego, California, (Marine Corps Recruit Depot) and Camp Pendleton, California. He served for one year in the Republic of South Vietnam. The program will also include quilt presentations to three brothers who served in Vietnam by Lynn Heald, chair of the Peace and Honor Quilts of Valor Minot Program. Several Gold Star families attending also will be honored. Others taking part in the program include Hailey Cree of Velva High School, who will sing the national anthem, and a color guard of Vietnam veterans representing four military services.     Memorial Ceremony inside the Vietnam Experience Exhibit at 11 a.m.

    Vietnam veterans and their immediate family will be given free admission on Vietnam Veterans Day, March 29. This marks the 51st anniversary of the day United States troops left Vietnam. Museum staff and volunteers will welcome each veteran throughout the day by pinning them with a Department of Defense Vietnam War Veteran lapel pin. At 11 a.m. Patriots Point will host a memorial ceremony inside the Vietnam Experience Exhibit to honor the 896 South Carolinians who did not survive the war. Medal of Honor recipient Major General James E Livingston, USMC (Ret.) ‘95, will serve as the event’s marquee speaker. A “living history” demonstration will accompany the event, with reenactors present to interact with guests. Throughout the day, representatives from the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center will be onsite to answer questions about various support programs available to veterans and their families. The Charleston Pops and Fed Up food trucks will be onsite until 2 p.m. Parking will be $5.
